A 1929 letter of support to Hubert Tunney from Wingate Miners’ Lodge Secretary John H Hart.
Wingate Miners’ Lodge Secretary John H Hart, a 1929 letter to Hubert Tunney

This 1929 letter from John H Hart, the Secretary of the Wingate Colliery Miners' Lodge, is the first letter in Hubert Tunney's surviving correspondence which indicates serious friction between him and other elements of local government administration. In this case it was a long-running disagreement between Tunney, then the Chairman of the ERDC, and the Council Chief Clerk, Col J Morley Longden who, Tunney alleged, was using his public office for private gain in his other work as a solicitor. The issue wasn;t finally resolved until 1937, when Longden was replaced.

Here, Mr Hart offers his sincere wish.

‘that you will prove successful in your stand against people employed by the public to look after public interests and using this position to further their own private interests.'

Several of the other surviving letters published in this section are couched in similar terms of Hubert Tunney's 'stand' for right’.
